(AUGUST 2010) – Blogging from the road on his way back through South Dakota’s Hills of Black and Gold, American Biker Minute host Jeff Ryan reports that the 70th Anniversary of The Sturgis Rally hit an all-time high attendance record of 700,000. The 2010 rally, which ran from August 9th through August 15th, nearly doubled from last year’s 450,000 attendees.

Unfortunately, attendance was not the only statistic on the rise. The associated press is reporting that there were nine deaths caused by accidents at this year’s anniversary rally, which is double the Sturgis ten-year average of four to five fatalities. In 2009, there were no deaths reported at the rally. Ryan believes that many of these accidents could have been avoided.

“After years and years of attending this event, I honestly believe that half of those accidents were avoidable. We see people who obviously have little or no riding experience come to this rally, and are packed in like sardines,” says Ryan. “In just one day, we helped pick up 3 downed bikes. Ride ‘em all year, not just a week in August. When you have nearly a million extra residents in a town of 6500 – something has got to give.”

Visit http://americanbikerminute.blogspot.com to read recaps of American Biker Minute’s experience at this year’s record-setting Sturgis Rally, with highlights including the nearly sold out Ozzy Osbourne show, the Bob Dylan/Kid Rock concert that pulled in 70,000 attendees, Pee Wee Herman sightings, $40 weddings and stories that will entice even novice bikers to make the trek out to next year’s Sturgis Rally.
