(JUNE 2013) – Metallica front-man James Hetfield joined Steve Black this weekend to co-host Envision Radio Networks® The Chop Shop. Celebrating its tenth year of guitar greatness, The Chop Shop was the first radio show devoted exclusively to the guitar. Over 900 interviews later, The Chop Shop host Steve Black sits down with Hetfield at the Orion Festival that rocked Detroit this past June 8th and 9th.

At the festival, Steve Black spoke with Hetfield about the process of putting the event together. “It’s just another adventure for us to bring people closer to music,” Hetfield explained. Discussing the lineup, the Metallica front-man said, “We don’t want to focus on one type of music. We want to focus on good music, but focus on it being something at least edgy, something that moves people in a different way.”  On the experience of playing live, Hetfield said, “Playing live for us has been the best drug on the planet.”

Hetfield also spoke to Black about Metallica’s upcoming trip to China. “Art and music… have no borders, so that’s why we do this, and that’s why we want to go to places like China,” said Hetfield.  “Seeing fans in a new country for the first time is always amazing.”

(MAY 2013) – Envision Radio Networks®The Chop Shop celebrates its 10th Season as the only radio show focused on the guitar. The Chop Shop, part of the Envision Rock Network that now has over 350 affiliates, made its debut during the week of May 17th, 2004. As it embarks on its tenth year, The Chop Shop is incorporating new features within the 2-hour weekly show including an Unplugged segment, counting down the top 50 songs of the last 10 years, and taking The Chop Shop out on the road.

The Chop Shop will now give listeners the chance to experience the guitar in its most raw form, unplugged and live, by featuring a new exclusive acoustic song from host Steve Black’s giant music library each week.

“I’ve collected so many acoustic songs along the way, from Five Finger Death Punch and Metallica, to Billy Idol and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and I’m looking forward to sharing them all,” said The Chop Shop host Steve Black.

Digging further into Black’s music archive, The Chop Shop will revisit the top 50 songs of the last 10 years. Black has compiled a list of his favorite songs from the past 10 years of The Chop Shop and will share a different track each week throughout the year, counting up until we reach number one at the end of season 10.

This summer, The Chop Shop is expanding “The Chop Shop on the Road” series and will broadcast live from some of rock’s biggest festivals including Rock on the Range, Shiprocked and Metallica’s Orion Festival. Black will be on the scene gathering exclusive on-site interviews for these live shows and future updates.

“During my 24 years on the radio, I’ve been able to conduct a little over 900 interviews, so the archive of first-hand information, especially about specific songs, has really gotten deep,” said Black. “Taking the Chop Shop on the road will allow our audience to really feel what it’s like to be back-stage with all the bands.”

The Chop Shop and Chop Shop Classic feature weekly updates on bands and tours, web exclusive content, and special guests all while playing 10 songs an hour. Joe is promoting “Analog Man,” his first solo album in 20 years, co-produced by former Electric Light Orchestra mastermind Jeff Lynne. The album also features some special guests, including Walsh’s brother-in-law, Ringo Starr.

“It’s still fun to write music and put it out and play in front of people,” said Walsh. “I feel more comfortable on stage with a guitar on than anywhere else. And that’s what I do. Being connected is a great feeling, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.”

When asked what song, to this day, gets the biggest reaction out of a crowd, Walsh replied, “Hotel California is the one that lights the house up. It’s still difficult to play right. That one I have to really pay attention to do it right.”

(APRIL 2012) –Envision Radio Networks® and The Chop Shop Guitar Show will pay tribute to the best guitar songs of the ‘90s from both veterans and newcomers with a FREE two hour radio special which will be available for Memorial Day Weekend broadcast.

Inspired by their own heroes who were burning up the fretboard in previous decades, plenty of guitar players made their biggest impact with songs released in the ‘90s including Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell, Metallica’s James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett, Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo and Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters. They came armed with riffs that had stylistic familiarity, and yet also ushered in new flavors of riffing that were previously unheard.

Additionally, veteran players including Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, Ted Nugent, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, U2’s The Edge and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd added important entries to their own existing guitar legacies.

Host Steve Black and a voting panel made up of both experts and programmers from Chop Shop affiliate stations will choose the very best guitar songs from the ‘90s, narrowing the initial list down to 90 choice moments which will be available on www.chopshopradio.com.
